What You Need to Know About Cat and Dog Exams

Pet wellness exams are the foundation of routine veterinary care. They’re the point at which we establish a baseline of health and address all of your concerns and questions. The exam typically begins with a weight, temperature check, and heart auscultation, followed by a complete, nose-to-tail physical examination of the ears, eyes, mouth,  skin, limbs, abdomen and back. Your veterinarian will discuss what they’ve observed, and point out any abnormalities that require attention. Blood, fecal, and/or urine testing may be recommended at this time, and if your pet is in good shape, we’ll administer the appropriate vaccinations and preventative medications.

Puppy and Kitten Wellness Exams

Treatment for puppies and kittens usually begins when they’re about 6-8 weeks old. Many puppies and kittens are born with internal parasites such as hookworms and roundworms, so deworming should be anticipated at their initial visit. Our veterinarian will conduct a thorough examination of your pet, and may choose to begin their vaccine boosters (depending on their health). During these visits, we’ll also talk to you about diet, exercise, training (for puppies), microchipping, and spaying/neutering.
